Post 'Matrix' idea patented by Sony

Sony has patented an idea for transmitting data directly into the brain, with the goal of enabling a person to see movies and play video games in which they smell, taste and perhaps even feel things, it was reported today.

The patent - based only on a theory, not on any invention - marks the first step towards a "real-life Matrix", New Scientist says. In the sci-fi film of that name, cyber-reality is projected into the brains of people via an electrode feed at the back of their necks.

In Sony's patent, the technique would be entirely non-invasive - it would not use brain implants or other surgery to manipulate the brain. The patent has few details, describing only a device that would fire pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify the firing patterns of neurons in targeted parts of the brain. Sony Electronics spokeswoman Elizabeth Boukis said the work was a "prophetic invention" and no experiments at all had been done on it.

I'd do it...but first they have to figure out how the brain stores the info. I doubt if we're running on NTFS...

Didn't you post that somewhere DD?

Maybe I was reading it on Googlenews.

That is AWESoME. I hope they are able to do that.

I am patenting the idea that you can take a pill (not a drug). And when you go to sleep at night you can dream whatever you want. Like you could take a pill that makes you dream that you are in a bunker pinned down by enemy fire or that you're a secret agent in the CIA.

the first program will be a diet program, one that send pulses of exercise and eating healthy food to your brain. Will be the end of obesity.

I wonder if they will pass laws making it illegal to do things in the sony reality, cause im sure theryll be alot of virtual political assasinations. Criminals will be perfecting ways to break into the Louvre and steal the Mona Lisa, or into Area 51 to see whats in there. I wonder if the supreme court would uphold the citizens right to think??

Hmm that would be better than any computer system out there right now.

Nothing beats seeing nothing but what you are supposed to see. No LCD screen or projector would beat that.

Games would be sooo realisitic.

They would have to make it so the body doesn't flip out so much if you are getting shot or something.

Graphics would have to be amazing too.

Valid points.

Besides that there are military remifactions of this technology.

When PS 2 was initially introduced it was discovered that the chip in it can be used to create Cruise Missiles. Sony had to go back and make some changes before they could reintroduce them in US.

I think Feds are after Sony for a reason... Lot of people just don't connect dots.

Na, I doubt that. I think they are a bit ahead of their game what government considers as military to consumer technology information transfer gap, i.e GPS.

I think that this is far off if it ever happens. The machine that runs that thing is going to have to super super fast and have excelllent video quality.

That would be hard to get all the proportions right.

Well the government should worry more about keeping their own weapons in their own hands than worrying about SoNY.

eek

At first glance this sounds like science fiction becoming science fact but, and it's a big but there have to be inherent dangers in something like this. The human brain is a very complex organ and can be decieved into believing that what seems real is real so any game or virtual reality your in could prove fatal.

Of course it's only theory at the moment but an application such as this if it ever happens, could be used for so many things and some of those things might mot be what the original inventors intended it for.

It's a very interesting idea though and may have beneficial properties for our growth as a human race.....we shall see.

Regards
