The Alaskan department of fish and game has issued a wilderness hazard alert.

As full winter begins to set in there are more and more encounters between man and bears especially around the streams and rivers where bears fish.

Alaskan department of fish and game representatives have been making the following information available to all hunter, fishermen, backpackers and others that may enter wilderness areas.

1. You should always wear several small bells on your clothing so that you make noise as you pass through the back country and therefore will not walk up on an unsuspecting bear.

2. Carry a canister of bear repellent pepper spray and know how to use it.

3. Know the difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear. The black bear is much more timid and will usually flee at the first sound from your bells. Grizzly bears are much more aggressive and tend to stand their ground.

4. You can tell what kind of bears are in your area by watching for their dropping and noting the following characteristics.

5. Black bear dropping are usually smaller and darker in color and contain mostly the remains of berries and sometimes squirrel or rabbit fur. These dropping have a somewhat sweat odor due to the berries

6. Grizzly bear dropping are usually much larger and lighter in color and quite often contain small bells and smell like pepper.
