Richter is logaritmic, for each point it increases it increaes by 10 times in amplitude. Energy release is different, a magnitude 6 earthquake is roughly 30 times greater than a magnitude 5 earthquake.

As a general rule earthquakes can be felt at 3 upwards.

An earthquakes intensity is measured by the Mercalli scale, but that changes depending where you measure the intensity, it goes down the further away you are from the epicenter

The amount of TNT needed to yield the same energy as a richter 9 earthquake is 32 Billion Tons

Sad

All this is almost beyond comprehension to think that so many could perish in such a short time! Our world is so beautiful but it can also be so dangerous, war, famine, plague and natural disasters such as this are so terrible and it always seems to hit those who are so poor.

I guess all we can do is try to stop anything like this happening again but how can such things be prevented? For all our technology, for all our science, we have no answer when nature decides to show it's true power.

Regards

Its really sad what happened to those people. They better get those bodies burried soon, or else disease will kill many more...

I would like to bring up on issue though, I live in FL and we have had horrible hurricanes knocking at our door every year. And when they hit causing huge disaster, nobody is their to help us...I almost think maybe we shouldnt even help these people. But yes we should help them anyways

i think u havnt noticed but a hurricane isnt as deadly and the hurricanes in FL didnt kill over 123,000 did they and did they leave over 5m people without homes? drinking water? food? power? Hurricanes are small compared to a Tidal Wave because the power generated by the one in Asia was unreal.... a hurricane when its over a clean up can start almost straight away and within 3 months the area is back to new.. it'll take years before the areas effected are rebuilt if they even do.. the countires wont have much income because of the tourist industry criplled so its unceratin what the future holds for these people who are stranded living outside against all the elements.. not knowing if they will live....

oh yea thats "not posting any more death tolls"

you see the devistation this causes,c an u think we shouldnt help, 123,000 dont die in 1 hurricane, this tsunami did and killed and made millions of people homeless and they need help, when u see the players on the news u cant help but feel sorry, people from all over the world are sending out supplies to there
and thias is one of the worlds worst disasters, and i thought it was alot wen i saw it for the 1st time and only 4,500 died

they can strike anywhere.. apart from places really inland ..

any of the plates can move and do the same thing..

Always CNN has claims it could affect the US.. to get media attention... there will be reports of "this could happen here and here" called a wake-up call to the world...

The US has to keep an eye on the island of La Parma in the Canary islands as it could cause a mega-tsunami that would wipe out the whole east coast of the US. In 49 the volcano on la parma erupted and cracked of the whole west side of the island which slid a couple of meters into the atlantic. That section weighing 500 million tonnes is expected to collapse into the atlantic soon, when it does it could start a mega tsumani which would cross the atlantic at the speed of a comercial jet. Its a very real threat thats more likely to happen than most other natural disasters.

Scientists are saying that the earthquake moved our orbit a couple of inches and sped up the rotation by 3 microseconds!

The member i was thinking of was animal_mutha who comes from malaysia, lets hope hes ok.
