Getting out of chopper?

So, I try to get off of the Littlebird that I'm tooling along in going to my little mission. When all of a sudden, my guy dies. The caption states that he jumped into spinning blades. Every map I've been in where I need to get on that stupid little chopper has resulted in my guys death! Is there a proper way to un-ass that thing? I can get out of a Blackhawk with no problems. What's the deal? It does not matter what map I'm playing either, stock and mod(user made for lack of a better word) the results are always the same.
