Each version of Linux has its plus and minus.
I hear that the best is Mandrake and/or Redhat.

I havnt tried redhat, since its not being released anymore by RedHat...
RedHat has started a product in the stead of RHLinux called the Fedora Project, and I think the latest release is Fedora Core 3... it looks pretty awesome and has some nice tools for servers. Mandrake Linux is by far the most user friendly, the easiest install as well. The latest version is 10.1 i think but im running 9.2 on my older box. http://fedora.redhat.com/ http://mandrakelinux.com/ Mandrake i think is still my fav.

it would be fun to play around with on an older machine but I don't want to screw anything up with my current configuration.

atholon....just partition out a 10GB section of your primary drive and dual boot it. Really it's not as hard as it sounds, and hey you might learn something in the process which is always good.

Yeah I may, I am getting DSL soon (hopefully) and I want to FDISk it then.
I installed WinXP Home on 100 gigs and Windows 2000 Pro Sp4 on the 20 gigs remaining. Maybe I will nuke the 100 part and smake it 90 gigs.

Linux can be run either purely from a command line (similar ms-dos's window) and if you run it in this mode, you can run linux on pretty much ANYTHING... However if you would like a GUI (Graphical User Interface) it helps to have about 128mb ram and at least a onboard video card. My server runs fine with 128mb ram and a 8mb savage 3d card from back in the day .
Linux has a bunch of nice themes for the GUI Desktop inferface and it is HIGHLY customizable . look at http://kde-look.org i think

KDE is just "window manager". Nothing more nothing less. If you would like to try linux before you go about installing it, get a copy of Knoppix. It's a cd based distro that runs from cd and you don't have to install anything. Just pop the cd in and boot your system from it and it will do the rest. This will let you play around with it and get a feel for it before you actually have to go through the process of installing it.

If you need more info about the different types of Linux, have a look here. WEBSITE
You can even download free versions. Haven't found a version that recognises my modem yet. Finally some of the programs are starting to make installing software easier but Windows is far the easiest to use. Linux might just be getting to the Windows 3.11 level. |
