France prepared to use nuclear weapons


Jacques Chirac says he is prepared to use nuclear weapons against any state that carries out a terrorist attack on France.

In a speech underlining the need for its expensive nuclear deterrent, the French President said that security comes at a price and France must be able to hit back hard at a hostile state's centres of power.

He said: "The leaders of states who would use terrorist means against us, as well as those who would consider using, in one way or another, weapons of mass destruction, must understand that they would lay themselves open to a firm and adapted response on our part.

"This response could be a conventional one. It could also be of a different kind"

Chirac, 73, who as president is commander-in-chief, said France's nuclear forces had been reshaped with the new strategy in mind and the number of warheads on nuclear submarines had been reduced to allow targeted strikes.

Experts believe the French arsenal comprises some 300 warheads.

Critics have questioned the role of France's nuclear deterrent, which accounts for some 10 per cent of the overall defence budget.

thats one of the last places i expected a statement like that to come from.. after all they wouldnt support the war (lets not change topic here).. but they are willing to use a nuclear weapon and kill thousands of innocent people with 1 hit?

Actually I call it being a coward, Anyone can turn a key and press a button...

And if anything it will fuel more a attacks, From what I have seen on TV, Terrorists have no respect for life, to me its like they think life is a curse.
God gave them life and they throw it back in his face, And then expect to goto heaven, Silly Buggers!

The french threat will be like a gift they dont care about lives lost, I think its a bad call!

These weapons have no deterant in the terrorist world I dont think, I just hope they never get used but that would be asking a big price in this day and age.

I don't believe for one minute this is anything more than posturing by a desperate leader and a nation that would not invovle itself in any war when others will do the fighting for it!
