Depends on what you want. To be blatantly honest, you'll get the cheapest deal buying an HP if you want to do games and such. They make good solid computers, and quality is good. Not to mention you can usually get a deal with a printer, keyboard, mouse, and monitor for under $800. You can't build one and get all that for that kind of money.

If you do want to build one, you just have to remember that windows is going to run around $100 off ebay, good mobo is going to cost $90+, cpu $120+, Antec case with psu $90+, HD $70+, cdrw $30+ or DVDRW $60+, vid card $100+. So just there you're looking at $600, and that's not even near the best (and with cdrw, not dvd). You could skimp on the case and psu, but I wouldn't...frying your stuff due to over/under powering isn't worth the saved $50.

This also doesn't include mouse or keyboard, rounded cables if that's your thing...

I have a Dell 8300 almost 2 years old now. ( 2.8 pent4 800FBS, 80 GigHD 7200RPM, 128 ATI Radeon Pro, 512MBDDR RAM,Audigy 2 Sound Card, 22 inch ViewSonic CRT, Intel optical mouse 5.1 surround speakers) I recommend Dell computers.I lost my 1st ina divirce but both have been reliable.
This is rigged fairly well for the price and just a suggestion. I will wait for the pent 5 before I upgrade :P

But how do you know if those are legal copies?

Don't want to buy an illegal copy. Just talked with a guy who had an illegal copyof windows XP professional. Microsoft caught him and disabled his email, internet and I think windows it self

Any ways at computer stores in my area I can get windows XP home edition OEM for $109, you just have to buy a piece of hardware.

Starting this month everytime you update Windows, it first checks if it's ligit or not. If not you're toasted!

I wondered when they were going to start doing that

How do you know if it's legit? Well, it's sold as supposedly legit, with certs and everything. If it comes out that it's not, you can sue them for fraud and any damages recieved for using an illegal copy of Windows unknowingly. Then you can actually afford MS's over priced crap...

EDIT: Where'd you hear that DD? I'd like the same news source

Tiger is ok, but I'd check Newegg.com first. I've ordered quite a bit from both, and almost every time had a problem with tiger. I only just now had a DOA from Newegg on a psu, and instead of having me ship it back to them, go through a big long process, they credited me enough money to buy an equal psu. Got it all worked out over the phone in 15 minutes.

Tiger, I've had to threaten with legal action for not giving me money back

Right on. I love mine that I built

What I was trying to say is, if you want the whole deal (monitor, kb, mouse), staying under $800 is tough. That's why it's important to identify the reasons for a new computer. If it's just the average use, a bit of gaming, etc, production computer is the best bang for the buck. But if you want a true performance system, building it is the only way to go.

Yeah the monitor bundles are good

I'd just find a super great deal on a monitor and build the system.

Go to Newegg.com and start putting together a package.

O, and like I tell everyone, don't settle for less just to save money. Something like a computer isn't something to skimp on. Spend the extra $50 on a great vid card and stuff like that. And only go with good motherboard manufacturers. I highly highly suggest Asus. I have two, and I love them both. One is really old, but it's still a trooper, and the other is a brand new Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe. This board is so great. The last I had was a Chaintech 7AJA, and all it was was a headache (all so I could save $30).

I've talked to a few friends that build comps and help others purchase comps, and they've all told me Emachines is getting better. No, it's not a gamer or high productivity machine, but if you just want something to fool around with and maybe casually play, it sounds like emachines have it nailed. Their old problems of crap quality seem to be gone. Right now, I'd buy an emachine over a compaq (even though compaq is now HP)...
