So. Hello. I am Zz and also have opinions as those who know me will no doubt testify.
Here is my first one on websites in general. You can try this yourself. Use google if you like or use your knowledge of websites to simply go and have a look at other peoples sites. This one for instance, or the BBC website or try finding more personal sites that like yours are by someone about themselves. You will find that most sites don't have a front introduction page. There is a reason for this and that is that in general they are not considered good webdesign practise. Think of the web and the gazillions of people that use it. What they want is speed. Broadbands rennaissence was started by gamers and filesharers but is being fed by people who use the net simply to surf and nothing more. They dont need 1 megabyte speeds but they want it. They want their information now and they want it fast. They dont want to go to a frontpage, especially one that is going to slow them down. You have a big picture (nothing wrong with that but its a biggy, the majority of webusers still use 56k, optimise it.), a call to some javascript that you don't then use and horror of horrors a background music loop. Not just a music loop but a WAV!!! 3.3 megabytes no less. Not soooo bad if you have one meg broadband running at full pelt but most people are on 56k, paying by the minute. For these people it could take more than 10 minutes to fully load your introduction page and for what? To find a link to your actual page. Thats not what people are after in the wide world of net. You could convert the tune to MP3 and dramatically cut down the bandwidth your front page is using up. Dont forget that most free ISPs have a limit on how many megs a month your site can take from their pipeline. If you got 100 users for instance (and you might advertising here) then that tune is seriously likley to either cost you money or have the ISP suspend your site until next month. Personally I would lose the music. You wont inconvinience slower users and wont irritate other people who have been listening to music quite loud and werent expecting somemore from your site. If you know good music offer the loop as an optional download or better yet link to a review section and make your site even bigger and more interesting as you rate and describe. In terms of frontpage I am with the guy who said ick, but I prefer notepad for the control (im not showing off, html is my limit I cant figure the good stuff out). Whats important though is that you are giving it a go and having a prescence on the net. Everyone who has internet access should have a homepage as far as I am concerned and you have so well done. The rest of the site though spartan is well presented and there is room for expansion which is important. But man that front page.... One last thing, intro pages will be the first ones Googles engine looks at when it rates your site. It wont look at the tune or the picture, just the code and all it will find is a couple of links and no content and that means low rating on the search engines. Intro pages...... gives me the icky shivers... |
