hey, just wondering how / where to download GIMP, they're website is oh so very unhelpfull

Did you follow the links? (GIMP for windows, then click Automated installeder, then click Stable under the word Download on left) which brings you to: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
the GIMP download (most recent stable version) and the GTK+ Run time (which is required), and also GAP, the GIMP animation package.
