If your router has 4+ ports, you can directly connect PCs to it and loose the switch.

what do you need the switch for? I can hook up 4 computers to my router

it's right if you only have 1 port on the router

Ahh my friend was doing it...I think hw has more than 4 computers.

I am pretty sure it is right...not sure how many he has on his router.

Thing is when he hooks em up to just the router he cannot see any of his shared drives on the network.

But he can if he does it this way.

I've W2K, ME, XP, and 98. connected via wireless router I had to turn on sharing on all of them to view their contents.

I also installed Router software on all of them.

Yeah I am pretty sure he did that. He seems to know his stuff. He just wanted to see if it was something wrong with the "topography" of the network.

If it is hooked up to just a switch it works fine but not when just connected to the router.

I think it is something like a built in firewall that is blocking it through the router...

Yep. That's the only thing that could do it.
