Not quite sure exactly what your asking, but if you mean to fade a small part while the rest is solid. Like you want a df guy faded infront of a background. Place him in a new layer on top of the backgorund. Then do your opacity change to that layer.

it is very easy and one of the basic things in photoshop you must learn if u want to make anything good.

some peeps use feathering: http://www.bluesfear.com/tutorials/Blending.htm

but there is an easier way but i cannot find a tutorial for it :/

i'll try to explain it:

make a background
make a new layer and add the pic to it you want to blend
in the layers pallette at the bottom there is a little button (grey with a white circle) called 'add layer mask'
press 'd' to reset your colors
then select the gradient tool
and greate a gradient from one side of the image to the other

what it does is make visible the parts of the image that u just applied the black to and the white part of the gradient will make the image transparent.

well it IS easy but i cant explain it very well without showing pics. try what i said and se if you can make some sense of it good luck

well, i tried ur gradient way but it did nothing at all.
i made a bg then i added my pic. i clicked the add layer mask and applied the gradient but it just left the pic as it was. i'll just have to stick with the bluesfear tutorial.
