Problems with LAN

Hi guys,

Hope maybe some of you can help. We have just recently acquired a second PC and have set up a LAN. Everything is working fine apart from one thing. When both PCs are connected to the internet, the master computer constantly alt-tabs. For example, when my husband plays BHD on his computer he gets returned to the desktop every few minutes which can get pretty annoying. The main computer is connected to an ADSL modem.
The other computer is connected with a LAN cable (regular one) to the main computer. (No router.)

So basically it is the most simple network system you can get. We used the Windows network wizard on both systems to get this working. Because we had a firewall of windows on the master, the slave couldnt make connection with the internet.
We turned the Firewall off and now the slave can be used on the internet too. Both PCs running Windows XP.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

you mean on your Pc (game not instill) on husband Pc (Game instill). when you press Alt + TAP on your PC he get kick to desktop?

only a note:
"Alt + TAP"
"Ctri + ALT + Esc"
"WIndows flag Key + D-key"
are shortcut to desktop keys.

think maybe there a share command that is need tobe disable in security connect area. this will have to do with key-broads basic your key-broad is talking and telling the other Pc to go to desktop.

not to clear i don't have 2-pc going together. but that what it seem to be. or at lease.

I think she means that the screen keeps minimizing even when they are not pressing it.

Try unplugging the network cable and see if it does it then.

hope this may help you out:

1.) WinXP Networking Protocols

this is the one you really need to read:
2.) Adding Windows XP to an Existing Network

Yup Atholon is right. My husbands PC is the master and mines is the slave. It doesnt matter what program he is running, be it BHD or anything else his screen is always alt-tabbing without me or him pressing anything. The problem only occurs when the slave PC is connected to the internet.

Thanks for the websites, I will have a good read through them.

Cheers,
Lioness

hmmmmm fist thing i think is that if that is just a regular ethernet cable that's where your problem lies....if you don't have a router or hub/switch then you need to be using a crossover cable. this is what could be causing the problems with your home network as the two computers are fighting over the IP addresses and control of the internet connection. from your post that is most likely what is happening.

Best Buy or any local computer shop or even Radio Shack should carry corssover cables and they aren't that expensive either.

o O (kinda surprised nobody mentioned this one)

Rgr that LiquidFX. This sounds very likely. I will buy a crossover cable and give it a try!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions,

I had the same problem with RavenSheild...think it was linked to MSN messenger or Windows Antispyware.
