Try an open source project: http://jocr.sourceforge.net/

You can find a broad range of free software by typing in what you want followed by 'open source'. I found that by typing 'open source ocr'

i try that scott bad not able even to open to use.

i did found one "ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Professional Edition" it scan the image in then convert them into word and not mixup text ether as is 98% of the paper was scan in as is, only if one place a box around the text it would replace it with [text] and not a solid line box around the text and if there a line (bar) going across the paper it be remove, but all over all it is editable so one can place them item back in without any trouble.

found it at cnet.com (download.com)
store link: http://www.abbyyusa.com/shop/
Demo (14days or 50 pages) Link: http://www.download.com/ABBYY-FineRe...html?tag=lst-1
file size is large 126.24mb
taken a long time to install but it works 99% great
Price tag is really high-up lets say it under 400.00 around about.
