Army Defuse Belfast Bombs

Army Defuse Belfast Bombs
Updated: 17:09, Friday November 24, 2006

The army has defused around half a dozen improvised bombs at Stormont after a notorious loyalist murderer stormed a meeting of Northern Ireland's politicians.

The Northern Ireland chief constable Sir Hugh Orde said: "Their potential for death, destruction and injury is being assessed."

"They are fairly amateurish in design - that does not make them any less dangerous."

Stormont was evacuated as Michael Stone, a former Ulster Freedom Fighter prisoner, burst into the building.

The Rev Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams were among those ushered away.

Stone is an infamous killer, who once opened fire on mourners at an IRA funeral, killing three people.

Witnesses claimed he barged his way through the revolving doors of Parliament Building.

Security staff immediately reacted, grappling with him and eventually pinning him to the ground.

Stone was seen with a firearm as he was held, but it was not clear if the gun, possibly a 9mm pistol, was real or imitation.

Earlier he had daubed in red paint on one of the pillars outside the main entrance a slogan proclaiming: "Sinn Fein/IRA scum."

Reacting to the news the Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said: "It seems that Michael Stone has gone on the rampage again, in a very dangerous way. But he was stopped."

"It just shows you exactly what we are trying to get away from in Northern Ireland."

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain has ordered an urgent report from chief constable Sir Hugh Orde into the breach of security at Stormont.

Northern Ireland's politicians has been discussing the St Andrews agreement designed to restore power sharing to the province.

Despite today's attack Tony Blair insisted that it was still "the only way forward."
