Decade Since City Blast
Updated: 13:15, Thursday June 15, 2006
A memorial service to mark 10 years since an IRA bomb exploded in Manchester city centre has taken place.
A candle was lit at 11.16am - the same time the blast happened on Corporation Street on June 15, 1996.
More than 200 people were hurt by falling glass and rubble but nobody was killed.
The city had been filling up with football fans expecting to watch England's European Championship game against Scotland in bars and pubs.
Police, acting on coded warnings, had evacuated 80,000 people from the city centre.
But one-and-a-half tonnes of homemade explosive ignited, causing injuries up to half a mile away and damage estimated at £700m.
Greater Manchester Police admitted last week they did not expect to charge anyone over the terrorist attack.
Deputy Chief Constable Dave Whatton said: "The Manchester bomb had a tremendous impact on the lives of people in the area, which is why we have thoroughly reviewed the case."
The bomb was the largest the Provisionals planted on the British mainland and renewed their campaign of terror.
Survivors and local dignitaries marked the anniversary with a service at Manchester Cathedral.
