Biggrin My Puter Broke

well my computer ( my windows install ) gave up the ghost
so I pulled that HDD out stuck another in and put windows 7 home pre. on it
and backed up all my downloaded and personal files from that drive...onto several HDD's
selected an HDD backed up files from it then to put windows 8.1 on it
and accidentally formatted the wrong drive butt every thing was on another
drive so I didn't loose any thing started the install over and installed w8.1 on the
correct drive ...the wrong drive incident would not have happened if I obeyed my
own rules. "always unplug all drives but the one i'm installing windows on...
Now I have to re-install every thing....I was in the process of backing up my
Origin and steam games to put them on different drives cause together
they eat up a 2TB HDD's...I did salvage all the maps I have been making....

Definitely a good rule!

Followed that rule when I formatted and installed windows server 2012 on my server, really thankfull to myself that I remembered to do that as I had no idea which drive was which as they ware the same type of drive and size

yea the windows install wont create the correct number of partitions if it see's one on another
drive and if that drive crashes or you replace it windows wont boot so only the drive you are
installing windows on should be connected...and if that drive is a different version say a 32 bit w7
and you are trying to install 64 bit w7 or a 32 bit w7 pro or
32 bit w7 ultimate and the other drive is w7 32 bit home pre. it will see that partition
and the install will stop and a incompatibility message will appear...you cant mix and match versions ...
it only works if only one drive connected. if you are duel booting this rule is paramount and always
boot the highest os first and with a bcd editor add the other os's...i.e. make the install and then plug
the other drives in and boot highest os...
