How Useful Is GIMP?

I'm trying to keep my computer clean and nice, so installing programs has become a bit of a big deal. I want to use GIMP to make just like website headers, buttons, and the mini graphics that give that site the zing. How good is GIMP, is it good enough to design good looking website graphics? I don't need to make wall papers, or sigs, just some website graphics.

GIMP can do just about any thing photoshop can do - you just have to learn how it is done - and it does have a steeper learning curve.

Do a google search for "gimp art" and you will find tons of examples - some are just down right amazing.

But it is 100% free, and you can use some photoshop plugins to help out

I bet if a perfessional GIMP user were to make a sig you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the sig made in gimp, and the sig made in photoshop.

lol - don't discredit the free stuff - there is a program out there called CinePaint which looks like an advanced version of GIMP - movie studios use it - its been used for Spider-man, Harry Potter, Last Samuri - just to name a few

But your right it is perspective - I personally don't like 90% of the sigs made in photoshop (not because it is photoshop, just don't like the style).

No argument there - as I said in my first post it does have a steep learning curve...

and if I had a spare $700 laying around I would get photoshop - But I have to stick to GIMP for now... Or use the 30 day trial after each re-format of my computers

GIMP is seen as a clone of Photoshop, originally for Linux.

The thing I don't like about GIMP is that everything's not in one window like Photoshop - other than that, it's awesome.

I also seem to have self-learned better than GIMP than I have at Photoshop. And I do reckon Photoshop hogs more memory on computers - so GIMP is a great alternative to have if you're system is not exactly high-end.

fllm gimp doesn't exist any more - its cinepaint

They only have an alpha version for windows right now - it is is a native program for the linux OS's

There is a link to its download page right off of their home page on the left in the green box

meh i'll try out gimp and see how i like it. all i'm trying to do right now is get my own personal blog, and a small hosting site design out. Seriously if I need designs that blow viewers away, I'll freelance for that, but for something small like a blog, or a hosting site where the graphics needs are really small (hosting site all i need is a couple of smiling people, laptops, and some flash sign of like the world haha) so it's not to hard.

if i don't like it, well maybe i'll try to get $700, but make do with what you can/do get i suppose.
