What forum software should I use?

I'm building a debate community, and need a great piece of forum software to integrate into.

vBulletin is what i want, and will eventually switch too but until then i need a free community!

phpBB - i don't know, i guess i could
SMF - Something about it I dont' like

Any free message boards other than the ones i posted would be great to knwo about . Refer me wherever. Thanks!

vbulletin is the way to go.. the new phpbb is nice though, but they seem to get hacked alot. Maybe thats user error though.. I know spam bots swarmed my old phpbb forums..

i know u really like it IcI..and I don't knwo why i don't like SMF as much. Perhaps it's becuase i feel the permissions system is a little limited, and I don't like most if not all themes made for it. I don't know man.

i really want to buy vBulletin, but I need to save up the cash first.

anyways I dug up an old forum I used to use...MyBB. the reason i quit using it was cuz of security flaws. however this version is now pretty secure and I must admit myBB is really powerful. Sub forums, great out of the box design, great data layout, and all that

yeah, themes are pretty limited... but for me the advanced features out weigh that.

An older version of SMF had a mod were permissions could be set for each member..

I'm thinking of checking out different forums that are based on perl or other languages other then php, to see what they are like

I just installed ikonboard (http://www.clutterspot.com/forum/) requires Perl to run... looks pretty good.
