"Just a game"

So many times in playing DFLW or leaving a message in a forum you read, “it’s just a game.” Young or old, newbie or veteran to online gaming the excitement of buying the latest edition is always there. You make the purchase and rush to your system to install. So many single missions I need to get familiar with the controls, screw it I’m going online and kill! Is it “just a game”?

Your getting good now and have won a few DM’s. You have lead in kills in TKOTH and could have taken the zonetime if you wanted to. Then you go into a TDM with some serious maggers and your going to show them a thing or two. You start out good and cap a few “ yes, I’m still on my game.” Then some peep hits you from across the map with a Fn/mag. Oh; he just got lucky I am coming back for that punk! You respawn and charge up the hill, “I’m going to own this lucky one shot wonder” he drops you before you can even see his black dot. Now your pissed and your cussing at the monitor, “he’s got to be cheating the bastard!” I got his ass now I am going around and drop this scumbag with a headshot. You run right out in the open and some noob named Gas Can who has 30 deaths and no kill’s hits you with his nade. “Arghhhh That guys sucks and he killed me, friggin nader!” Your yelling at your monitor, hands are sweating and your heart is racing! My ratio is going to be bad and everyone will think I suck, but I’m really good. You have lost it now and you get raped in the spawn repeatedly typing, “BS” “BS” “What’s your connection you lagger from hell!” Is it “just a game”?

You get home from work, quick turn on the system. Got to check my e-mail, any news from my buds? Any matches lined up I need to confirm? Wow, 23 e-mails and all from my friends. Friends I often plan my life around so I can hang with them in cyber land and kill the punks who think they have a better squad. Buddies who you laugh, win, and sometimes lose but always enjoy playing with. Guys and gals that you not only know where they like to shoot from, but you know how many kids they have. Often sharing the good and bad news with what’s going on in your off-line life. Friends you pray and feel for when some tragedy has entered their life. Comrades you send birthday cards to and congratulate when they get a promotion or do well in school. Some idiot flames you in a forum and your cyber family shows up in force to defend you no questions asked. Your brothers and sisters online who fight by your side to uphold the squad reputation and will always cover your back. Is it “just a game”?

I have played games all my life, school sports, card games and all the rest. I know of no game that can make me so mad one minute and leave me dancing in my living room the next. I have yet to play a game where I make friends that stay in touch daily for years, without ever even seeing me in person. Your mates spend hours on top of hours doing websites, lining up matches and setting up tournaments. No one ever asks for anything in return and yet have a question about computers, Nova World or life in general. Send it out in squad e-mail and you will have ten answers including websites to surf in a matter of hours.

Hanging out with the best of friends. Teamwork and intense competition at it’s finest. A past time that will keep you busy for hour after hour. You win that tourney your smiling all weekend. You lose to a squad full of laggers in the last minute of TKOTH and your mad for days. All of this and more found on one little disk. Is it “just a game”?
