UK heist sets cash record
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...E29677,00.html
UK heist sets cash record March 01, 2006 LONDON: Auditors say pound stg. 53million ($125million) was stolen in last week's heist at a security warehouse near London, making it the largest cash theft in Britain and one of the biggest in the world. Warehouse owner Securitas Cash Management Ltd had confirmed the total after an audit, Kent police Assistant Chief Constable Adrian Leppard said. A British judo champion has been questioned about the record armed robbery on the Securitas cash depot in Kent. Chris Bowles represented Britain at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and at the peak of his career was a European and British champion. He also taught at Tonbridge public school and is a senior coach at a Tonbridge judo club in Kent. Detectives refused to confirm that Bowles was the man arrested on Saturday after a white Ford Transit van was found at a hotel with two plastic bags containing pound stg. 1.3million, weapons, balaclavas and body armour. Police were also searching the home of Bowles's friend Lea Rusha - a kick-boxing expert from Southborough, near Tunbridge Wells. Four men have been arrested during raids over the weekend and on Monday. Police are also reported to have recovered a van and a forklift truck close to where 14 steel cages holding the banknotes was dumped. The forklift may have been used to move the cages. Detectives now have seven vehicles they believe were used in the robbery but yesterday Constable Leppard said police were still searching for the white Renault lorry which was driven in to the depot early last Wednesday morning by the gang. Constable Leppard said 10 addresses had been searched during raids and material was being examined by police. The amount taken from the cash depot on February 23 eclipses the pound stg. 26million stolen by a gang from the Northern Bank - then owned by the National Australia Bank - in Belfast in December 2004. Last year, thieves stole the equivalent of $95million from Brazil's Central Bank, and in 1987, the equivalent of $88million in cash, gold, gems and other valuables was taken from the Knightsbridge Safe Deposit Centre in London. Both raids are dwarfed by the wartime theft of $US900 million in US bills and as much as $US100 worth of euros from the Iraq Central Bank in 2003. |
