1 gig of ram

This question is for any who has experience with 1 gig of ram.

In the system I build, I'll be using an AMD 2800+, and I'm trying to figure out whether or not to spend the extra dough for 1 gig or if 512 will be fine. What it really comes down to is, is the performance increase from 512 to 1 gig worth the extra $70?

It has been my experience that any upgrade in ram is like a big kick in the arse for a pc, but also that past 512 really doesn't do much (but this has been a while...new technologies and software have come out ).

definatley worth it.
especially if you play any newer games or do any gfx/media/video work.

i didnt think it was really needed, but just i checked out the ammount of ram that doom 3 wanted as it was loading, as soon as the level started to load it went to 400+MB, and increased dramatically. after getting an extra 512 my comp is much happier.

Im running 2800+ also with my 2x 512 MB DDR in Dual Channel modus and i can tell you, the paym, ent for an upgrade to 1 gig is worth it.

I dont know if your mobo supports Dual Channel DDR but if it does you oughta use it. Im running @ 2x 400 MHZ works like a charm

Yeah, it supports dual channel. After researching dc though, I was under the impression that it really didn't make much of a difference.

400+ Stevie? Zowie! Alright, I guess it's 1 gig for the doc

Thanks for your input guys

Hey, what brand is good, or does it matter? I really don't think I'll OC any, and I've had good results with Crucial...whadda y'all think?

if your not gonna overclock then just get any.
but seeing as you have dual channel make sure they are the same type.

yeah dual channel give something like 2% extra performance, but you might find you have no option to run dual channel mode. the alterative would be a 1GB stick of ram, which may cost more then 2 sticks anyway. and unless you want more than 1.5 gb ram in the future (presuming u have 3 slots), then get 2x512
