BT Quadruples Broadband speeds

BT 'quadruples' broadband speeds

BT office

BT is to increase its broadband speeds by up to four times from 31 March.

The firm said 78% of its users would be able to access at least four megabits per second (4Mbps), compared with the maximum of two available now.

Almost half would get 6Mbps and those close to their local exchange would be able to access 8Mbps.

Some rival providers already offer up to 24Mbps, but their services are restricted mainly to clusters of users in big cities.

BT said more than 5,300 exchanges serving more than 99.6% of UK homes and businesses were being upgraded to support the higher speeds.

As well as making web browsing and e-mailing quicker, higher speeds mean people can do more with their net connection, such as watching video, listening to audio, and playing online games.

about time although i hope their get rid of that fair useage policy..

no u dont... especially if its just for internet.. for such an advanced country, with state of the art technology.. our internet speeds let us down, there might be 8mb download connections, but our uploads havn't went above 1MB yet (well for residential) i have 2mb down and a 256k up..

unfortunately ony a few exchanges go live at the end of march.
iirc mine is in august

although we should get high speeds as currently my stats suggest it can take 8mb/s already w/out the update.

lots of ppl are having speed problems accross uk atm, possibly due to BT's work on the exchanges.

regarding the upload speed... yeah a pain sometimes, cant even host a decent game with 256 upload. but it goesa long way to preventing piracy. imagine everyone with 8mb/8mb connection.

i can get SDSL in this area for a symmetrical connection but the prices are ridiculous.

hehe those lucky gits in sweden, 100/100 connections

I'm also with Blueyonda Broad Band.
But upgrading to the 10Mbs, But only 356Kb upload. Pritty crap if you ask me.
If the Upload was equal or half the Download speed. That would be a great connection.

you will always have lower uploads as they class hosting websites/games servers or uploading large files as business so you will need to pay for a business line if you want fast uploads, its how they make there ££

Thats on fiber though Theres a bit of an installation cost to get 100/100 like $60-100 and maybe $40-50 a month so its quite expencive

I have 8/1 ADSL, you can get 24/1 here though but i dont see the point on my behalf heh

Pay around 35 a month for 8/1, its like 40 for 24/1 DSL

what the ISP or other users?

no one steals your bandwidth, unless someone is snatching the net from you.. ie. wireless connection.. companies only upgrade speeds if they can guarntee the speed for everyone.. (usually)
