My humble advice is reinstall. If that doesn't work, uninstall Windows Live Messenger via Add/Remove Programs and remove the folder and everything. Then reinstall. I can't 100% guaruntee you it will work, but it's worth a try.

I agree with Mike 100%. I'm a punctuation geek (that's why I spell 98% of the time correctly) and I can tell what's real and what's not. Microsoft speak really formally and I know that 100%.
E.g:

Real:
Error. Windows Live Messenger licence corrupt, please try reinstalling.

Fake:
Error. Windows Live Messenger licence corrupt, pleases go try reinstalling it again.

Etc... I was gonna point that out but I thought it was one of Microsoft's workers' screwing up or it's a flaw or something. Good thinking Mike!

Download Windows Live Messenger from the official site or get it from SoftPedia or Download.com which I 100% trust with downloads.

1.) use exployer browser for updates and as it you at it log-in with the Live messager.
2.) scan the Start>Run>chkdsk /f >Press Y>enter-key> reboot the system.
3.) last still getting the error> unstill it then reboot system then instill the software after log-in.

windows update site will not work with FoxFire browser only IE6 and newer version.

if you can do a virus bootup scan if you can or in safemod do a virus scan there deep scan. check everything.

could be the router is blocking the setting or firewall is set to sealthmod too high meddle setting is fine.

Get a registry cleaner. Registry cleaners clean out errors and stops them from showing up.
Get one that can fix invalid entries (all of them do lol just being bang on).

It works.
