Why I'm a script nerd and why I picked here

Besides the obvious fact I love the games, why am I here and why the heck am I a such a script nerd at this age?

Well, using any sort of code started because I had to use some type of basic script and a bunch of DOS commands in my course of work.

This was usually at control room workstations and PLC's (remote computer installations that monitor machinery etc) along with a bit of VB Script in document macros in later years.

The 70's were bliss (when I was just a lad) and then I suffered the financial disasters of the 80's (as an adult) but then 2000 and onward brought on a long needed career change, for many Australians not just myself.

This gave me more time behind the ever powerful home computer (PC).

For a long time it would've cost tens of thousands of dollars for computer power that would fit in a phone today and also a myriad of external hardware and wiring was required, which made it prohibitive to all but the very well heeled or the insanely keen.

I had responsibilities and income that couldn't share that load but...!

Suddenly you discover that now you can do much much more with the software tools and power of today's computers than you ever dreamed possible back then and at long last it's all affordable.

Y'all probably get the drift now.

Now I'm able to go from the workshop to the playroom at the click of a mouse.

So here I am.

I laughs out whenever i see a computer of the older times. Nowadays, the computers have become so much advanced. In a few decades, the children of the next generation are going to laugh looking at the computers of 2016 and their functions.

My first job in 1966 (I was 16 at the time and just finished high school)was 2nd greaser on an IBM 1040 punch card computer system. the punch card gearing required to be greased every 2hrs. or the punch cards would go flying.(not a welcomed sight, with 50,000-100,000 card on the floor). my first computer in 1980 was a kit (Z-80) from sinclair computing (England). it ran at a wopping 4MHz and had 1000 bits of memory, but you could add a 16k extension pack (that always fell off). it ran a z80 processer (basic language). every thing was wrote in DOS (disk operating system).I was in stationed at Bentwaters R.A.F (USAF) at the time and working on computers for the USAF at the time..(I still have that old computer.) So script can be VERY important. nuff said.

City Ace: the Z80 ONLY came with a cassette tape drive (which you needed to insure the record volume wasn't too high or too low or it wouldn't record or install a program) my first computer with a hard drive was a commodore colt (IBM compatible ran windows 3.1) it had a whopping 2M hard drive, companies offered a 10 Meg hard drive for around $100.00 (1985). The Commodore colt had 2-5.25 floppy drives. now I have a Asus x99-A motherboard 32Gb DDR4 ram, 6 internal 3 Tb hard drives 2 external 3 Tb hard drives the CPU is a Intel LGA2011-3 i7-5960X 140W . 1500 Watt power supply. All encased in a antec 1200 case. the case has a big boy 12" fan on top 2 8" fans in the back a 1 8" fan on the side. the core temp runs around 135F/57.2C. under load.

100 bucks for a 10 MB Hard drive. If in this rate hard drives are priced, then now it might have costs a million dollars to but a 5 TB Hard Drive.

In 1965 IBM had a 15 Mb hard drive made for there new computer(the computer took up 4000 sq. ft.) the hard drive was 8 ft. sq. and weighted in just under 2000 lb. cost $24,000.00. just think Windows 7 requires between 16-20 Gb to install (64 bit). HOW MANY WOULD YOU NEED ?

My first Windows PC and my pride and joy from memory had Windows 95 with,

32Mb HDD "IDE"

4MB RAM "DRAM"

2MB Graphics Card

Massive external CD ROM - It needed a floppy disk with something.bat, config.sys and cdrom.sys to operate it.

About 4-5 minutes to boot.

stompem: Did a lot of programming in basic and assembly code back then. remember making a new directory c:/md/house etc. now FOLDER NOT MADE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE A NEW FOLDER? I remember writing a 2000 line basic program for a simple task and took over an hour to write, because you always had a syntax error in the pgm the took forever to find.

At least for me, debugging syntax errors was a totally manual and laborious process.

Now it's common to have auto complete, suggestions or warnings of errors as you're typing.

I remember debugging a 2500 line basic pgm only to find that the " > " should have been " < " sign. I think I lost a few hairs that day.
