most routers have a DMZ host setting and it is the easiest way to host ..in fact if theres no DMZ host and you routed...you might not be able to play at all...depending on the routers security settings.....i run a linksys 5 port router/switch for my home network...but unfortunately theres no DSL in my area yet.

Re: Cant Host or cant join game with router - get help here

1) I just set up static routing in my router gateway site. Will that let me host?

2) If not how do i change my DMZ?

Ty

think you can ask your ISP people you pay service for, think they can walk you through it. get it going right.

sent a PM with all the details in it, so you can get help from them.

Never ever use DMZ, you'll open uo your PC wideopen to the outerworld, and a firewall doesnt mean jack***, if someone wants to get in, they get right through your firewall without you or the firewall even noticing.

Use www.portforward.com to set up your router to host games, its all explained there.
Switching to DMZ is the same as leaving your door wide open at night while your at a party or having a dinner somewere.

Everyone that gives the advice to just use DMZ should be slapped, and need to get some knowledge before they ever tell someone to use DMZ.

I wouldn't be surprised if most forwarding issues that people have are because of not specifying the correct port type.

To host BHD for example, all you have to open up is port 17479 udp. That is all I ever open up in my router (well, have to forward a port for Anaconda remote access).

An other thing I have been cautioning people on that I help is to make sure that your game server internal IP isn't DHCP assigned, other wise next time you reboot the game server its IP may change and then you will have to go through the whole process again.

As has been stated, DMZ isn't wise to use as it allows all traffic to access your computer, unless you have certain ports already forwarded to other computers. that is 65535 different ports that are exposed to the internet world

For those who are interested, here is a list of all the registered ports and what they are used for http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

dang i beat ici to a subject like this for a change.

yep nice link Ici, to bad they dont show game ports.. If that was the case it would have been a tremendous help for all gamers that want to have there own server at home.

At www.portforward.com they do have most ports listed for games, it's worth checking that out. They have a step by step how to for putting up servers, concerning the router part.
