ever wanted to feel bullets in a game?

Fri Oct 19, 2:44 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A US surgeon working on a "tele-health" breakthrough has devised a way for video game warriors to feel shots, stabs, slams, and hits dealt to their on-screen characters.

A vest designed by doctor Mark Ombrellaro uses air pressure and feedback from computer games to deliver pneumatic thumps to the spots on players' torsos where they would have been struck were they actually on the battlefields.

The "3rd Space" vest will make its US debut in November at a price of 189 dollars. It will be launched with the first-person shooter game "Call of Duty" and a custom-made title.

"It was originally designed as a medical device," Ombrellaro told AFP while letting gamers try the vest at the E for All video game exposition in Los Angeles.

"To give medical exams via the Internet to prisoners, the elderly, those in rural communities and other isolated people."

The medical version of the vest is more sophisticated, enabling doctors sitting at their computers to prod, poke and press patients' bodies from afar and get feedback on what they are virtually feeling, according to Ombrellaro.

That model is pending approval by the US Food and Drug Administration, which wants to be assured that diagnosis made using the vests are reliable.

"You can teleconference with patients but you are missing the hands-on," the vascular surgeon said. "Being able to do that is the last step to tele-health."

A 3rd Space vest that mimics the feeling of G-forces and turning pressures for flight and car games is to be launched early next year, after Ombrellaro's company TN Games finds exciting titles to match it with.

TN Games is based in technology giant Microsoft's home town of Redmond, Washington.

"We've had some Microsoft people check it out," Ombrellaro said.

Awesomeness. Will it actually be as sore as a real-life bullet?

Chris

I am sure that it is not that strong. It is probably just a small impact to let you know you were hit. No one would buy it if you wound up hurt...at least I hope not.

I don`t know if it will catch on...personally I think that it is too much...if you want something that real, go paintballing or play airsoft.

It's a good idea, but far from being profitable. I know I won't be spending 180 to feel a bullet hit me. I can stick to the vibration and my yelling/screaming when I get hit . Once it (if ever) gets down to $20-30, maybe $50, I'll pick it up. Until then...I'll say no thanks .

there was an experimental rig kindof like this that the military was playing with and ya would use a full body suit and a VR helmet and the gun was thecontroller and where ever you pointed it the guy in the simulation would mive the same way, and if ya get hit it sends a few volts thru you for a good reminder to take cover.

cant remember the name for the thing thoe.

Dosent mean anything, in pretty much all developed countires its held that you cant sign away yopur legal right, the most fundamental of which is the right to settle a dispute in the judicial system. About the only place where you can sign away things is New Zealand.

Anyway, the general consensus is that it will be weak, i figure if we wait for mauser to buy one hed soon be able to post a guide on tweaking it to ramp it up a bit

they say if you press down too much (3-8psi 2-5cm area) pressure on a spot on the body, any spot were the nevr path you can ether make a lot of pain for the person or some case kill them, beside nevr damage in the area, i could see if it go bad they may get sue for it.

gun shot to the chest? there goes the ticker lol

will some people die in their sleep do to a nightmar now you in heavy into the game play your mind is set and now you really can feel that sniper shot to the chest or back area, how will your mind handle it. if your totally deep into the game play. gamers will only know lol
