how did it happen? like i mean i know it was a little... wait i mean a big safety accident. one of the reactors blew up, Prypiat was evacuated from the nuclear fall out.

Simple version:

1. They start to conduct a test that could increase the efficency by 20 - 30%
2. This involves shutting off the safety systems, the reactor overheats and the neuclear reaction can not be stoped so the core melts which most likley comes into contact with water or steam or simular which causes an exploation.
3. Roof leaves the building and the disaster is a fact.
4. Pripyat is avacuated a week or so later. (think it was somthing like that)
5. A week or two later a Swedish powerplant raises alarm as workers show off increaded levels of radioactivity. They think that the pant is leaking radiactivity but after further investigation they determine that the radiactive fallout is comming from the outside of the plant and determine that it's most likley coming from Tjernobyl. This was before the accident was known by the world, and the reason why it become known to the world so early in time. (Soviet was great at keeping seacrets.

Note, this is out of my memory so there are certainly errors but probebly not that many heh
