Half Life 2 Weapons

Crowbar

It wouldn't be Half-Life without the crowbar! In Half-Life 2, the crowbar's alternate fire flings a combination of hard-boiled eggs and lasers at your enemies. Just kidding.

Actually, the crowbar's power has improved significantly since Half-Life. One swipe is sufficient to take down barnacles and headcrabs, and two or three will drop the first Combine soldiers you come across.

Pistol

The pistol looks to be an H&K USP Match, the same gun carried by Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider movie.

In terms of gameplay utility, expect to be using this weapon for a long time. Ammunition is plentiful early on, it's accurate and it does a respectable amount of damage. A couple of headshots will take down the early Combine soldiers pretty easily. Once you hit the tougher soldiers, however, this pistol is likely to be relegated to zombie- and headcrab-killing duty, since no other weapons use its ammo.

Magnum

The Magnum revolver from the first game reappears here, sans zoom mode. It's wonderful for taking down most opponents (one shot to the head should be sufficient, even for heavily-armoured Combine), but its ammo is far less plentiful than that for other weapons, since enemies almost never seem to use it themselves. (Image coming soon)

Shotgun

The shotgun is also returning. It seems to be modeled after the Italian SPAS-12, like the shotgun from Half-Life. You won't acquire it nearly as quickly, but its power is substantial; save it for really dangerous enemies, like fast zombies.

Submachine Gun

As with Half-Life, Valve got a little creative with the submachine gun, giving it a grenade launcher and an extended clip - the difference being that it's an MP7 now, rather than an MP5. The red-dot sight is pretty much entirely for show.

Sadly, the weapon doesn't appear to be as ubiquitously useful as in Half-Life. Its range is too poor, the grenade launcher's capacity is much lower and it doesn't do enough damage over time in most situations. Pull it out when you need the grenade launcher, or when you get ambushed by something at close range. The grenades have been nerfed a bit, too; they have significantly less range, you can only carry a couple at a time and they don't pack nearly the punch they used to. The main thing the SMG has going for it is that its ammo is by far the most common.

Crossbow

The crossbow from Half-Life is back with an interesting modification - it appears to fire superheated rebar that pins and instantly kills most enemies that it hits. Hardly an elegant or practical weapon in real life, but then, this is a game, isn't it? (Image coming soon)

Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher

The RPG from the original Half-Life is also returning, although the targeting laser is now more advanced. Specifically, the tracking on the rocket is much tighter, and the rocket can come back to hit an aerial target that it has missed. Note that unlike the first game, there is no alt-fire to disable the laser targeting system - probably because the tracking has been improved so much. The lessened ammunition capacity, however, really limits the weapon. Since gunships require five rockets to kill and you can only carry three (with no guarantee that every rocket will connect), you'll find that rocket ammo is plentiful when there are gunships about, but absent pretty much everywhere else. A shame, really.

Antlion Pheremone Globe

This item allows you to control infinite hordes of antlions in Nova Prospekt. As you move through that area, antlions will create entry points that they can come out of until you have a "squad" of four that will replenish itself via those points constantly. The antlions will generally follow you around and attack any hostiles that come by, regardless of your current weapon. By alt-firing the spore globe, you "call" your squad to you, and by throwing it, you tell them to move/attack where you threw the globe. Sadly, it won't work for you the whole game, but it's unbelievably fun while it lasts!

Gauss Gun

The Gauss Gun\Tau Cannon from Half-Life is mounted on the buggy. It's not quite so cool as the pulse gun on the first vehicle, unfortunately.

Gravity Gun

Can be used to manipulate objects at a distance. When focused on a movable object, the gun "opens," at which point the primary fire will "shove" it, and holding the alt-fire will attract it to the gun. When the object gets close enough, it will "stick" to the gun and you can let go of the alt fire. Once you have the object held, the alt-fire will drop the item harmlessly, and the primary fire will send the object flying straight ahead of you. Many objects can be used as powerful weapons like this, especially in the Ravenholm section, when you're mainly fighting zombies.

Pulse Rifle[/b]

The pulse rifle is the closest thing HL2 has to an assault rifle. It packs a punch and is quick to reload, but has poor accuracy and chews through ammunition like it's going out of style. This is especially unfortunate given that you can only carry two extra "clips." Still, it's the weapon of choice against heavily-armoured Combine because of its power and the fact that those same Combine soldiers tend to have one or two per squad for your reloading pleasure. Like the MP7, the pulse rifle has a grenade launcher on the alt-fire. The pulse rifle's grenades are unconventional, to say the least - they act like a rubber "superball" and seem to burn/phase away any enemies they hit. They do have a long delay between the trigger pull and the launch, though, so be careful.

Fragmentation Grenade(s)

Frag grenades have a relatively small explosion radius, and they have some kind of LED on them. Otherwise, they're pretty straightforward. They're great for clearing dug-in Combine soldiers or large groups of less dangerous enemies, like zombies. Also, remember that you can pick them up with the gravity gun and toss them back at Combine that throw them at you. Joy!

Enjoy it!

the mag rules

i still could never figure out which was the most useful at the end. the sub is great as it has loads of ammo, but the pulse is more accutate. shomehow i always ended up running out of ammo and kicking some ass with the shotgun.

i guess i used them all the same amount of time.
