People throw away there computers

I was reading on CNET news.com about people throwing away there whole computers (Monitors + everything) because there computers had become infected with spyware LoL. Although most of these people have money to blow, all you have to do is insert the windows disk and upon setup tell windows to format the drive first. Thought it was kinda funny.

Let me break it down:

New computer ($400+++)

OR

An extra hard drive (requires installation but it's pretty damn simple, if you can't figure it out then throw the pc away)
Copy of windows.
------------
$300

Use main hard drive for windows + programs that are installed.
Use extra hard drive for files you are never going to delete, pictures, music, keep safe junk.

volla, there you have it. You can have a new computer every month if you do it that way + keep all your stuff. I format at least once every 3-4 months and I don't even get spyware or viruses. Just like a nice new clean computer.

People are Idiots

going off topic a bit with this one sry...

i was working in a council IT dept the other week and the guy i was with showed me the basement where all the old equipment went. not stuff that was broken, just was being replaced.

the previous week they had got rid off 100 monitors and there was still at least this much left, all iiyama monitors 17" to 23" !

not only monitors but there were full systems, laptops, b/w and colour laser printers and pretty much everything else that gets used in an office. ALL IN WORKING ORDER.

what is even more crazy is that the council have to pay a firm to take away and dispose of the stuff 'properly'.

they used to sell off the stuff to the employees with proceeds going to charity (like £5 for a full system!!!). but there are all rules and regulations etc that prevent this now.

i tried but they wouldnt let me have a 23" monitor

Our school was getting rid of some monitors when I was a Janitor and they let me take one. They were 15" ones but worked fine.

We need to figure out a way to milk this terrible situation. Even if it's old <1.5 ghz systems, there's money to be made there.

you can get drunk and laid for the same price...actually cheaper..I just spent $30 at the bar and the lay was only 5$..(Long Island Ice Tea) ..go cuddle with your harddrive:P ...

I have a Dell..(looks over shoulder) ..who can build me something better for less than a grand?...my friend likes AMD..I have no idea..I just don't want to end up like FPS Doug...(smashing it in the garage in a fit of disco fury)..

I am happy with my Dell(looks over other shoulder) and can play a ton of games effortlessly..but I am not sure I want to upgrade with them(Dell) after hearing you guys brag....

Most of my problem is connection...I own the fastest available con here..which is ADSL 3.0 MB..but my best test speed so far has only been 1.3Mb...no cable server here in this BORING A$$ TOWN...

current: 8300 Dimension
Pent4 2.8
512Mb DDR @400 800FBS
128ATI Radeon (2)
Audigy2 Sound card
16DVD with a 48CD+DVDRW

I added a 22 inch ViewSonic monitor SRT
and a 5.1 surround
Logitec optical mouse (5 button)

so whats next? and how fast is fast enouh..what would you build a (love to be serious gamer) and wanna be photographer for an upgrade ?

We're not saying Dell's and gateways are BAD computers. What were saying is people don't understand that spending $400 gets to almost nothing with them.

But building your own, if you have a monitor, case, keyboard, speakers etc can be somewhat cheaper and is not a bad idea. You'll be very happy you did it.

$1,000 will get you a nice machine that can always be upgraded.
