Vikning text

We (me and my fellow classmates) ware tought the ᚠᚢᚦᚮᚱᚴ "alfabet", the letters that Vikings used, at 4 - 6th grade and it was great fun but unfortently I have forgotten it all but once again trying to relern it, its a part of my history and now in later years I've been more and more interested in history, not only swedish but mostly and especially the viking history

Here's an old runestone:

Original photo Copyright: http://kmb.raa.se

Blue: eftiR
Green: rafn
Red: Brothur
Yellow: sin

Rough translation: after rafn brother his
Translated to english it's: after his brother rafn

Really easy to understand in swedish aslong as you get the ᚠᚢᚦᚮᚱᚴ letters translated to ours

The whole translation is: Bjorngeirr had this stone raised in memory of Hrafn ("Raven"), his brother, Gunnulfr's lad in Sweden.

EDIT: Strange, the database of NHQ has no issues with the futhark letters that are more then 1500 years old but has issues with a common modern swedish letter

I think it's because we switched to utf-8 a long time ago.. A lot of corruption happened with some words and what not which was pretty annoying. I hate charsets.

Nice find by the way. It's funny how history grows on people with age. Is there more story behind the stone?

Not much more is known, it's hard to set a year of when the runes ware inscribed but from the futhark "letters" used with some influenses of more modern letters such as the letter e which wasn't present in the futhark 16 letter version, so I would guess on around 1000 - 1200.

There are 2835 runestones from the viking age in Sweden and 479 in the rest of the world. There are several runestones where i live aswell, on is around 5 km away from here

Here's a map: http://www.fotograaf.se/images/runstenarsverige.svg

Yeah i hate them too scott
