fk the barrett, what about the eurofighter typhoon which relies on 70 different computers to stay in the air as its designed to be *aerodynamically* unstable for agility
*the biggest word ive used today as for the M1A2 taking RPGs/tank rounds without damage... doesnt it all depend on: 1. the angle of the shot 2. type of ordinance 3. location it hits (if memory serves me right the tracks and front is the soft spots?) *edit* knew id get that part wrong Last edited by -Tigger-; 07-26-2009 at 03:25 PM. |

Rear, the front has the thickest armour. Anyways, both the Eurofighter and the JAS 39 Gripen are built that way, pretty daring to pilot those things as you say they will crash without the computers, the benefit is that they can turn on a dime and in the case of the JAS it helps it to land on very short runways, there has a been a succesfull aircraft carrier landing without arrestor hook on a simulator and can probebly poll it off in the real aircraft, no one would ever try it though as it's hard enough to do it with an arrestor hook hehe

Yeah I know, it's impressive how man has gone from a musket ball that could barley hit the broad side of a barn door at 70 feet to a rifle that can hit a 4 foot target at 1.5 miles.

to think with a GPS it get better in the future one can snipe millions of miles away ether an small rocket/ round or some bigger type round
GPS location> spy satellite> image zoom in to the GPS location to get a close look at the said target> then shoot the fetal round off all it takes is a atom round size into the brain case.

Lockheed F16 Falcon had that (fly by wire) way back in the seventies. They recently developed electric armour that let a lightweight APC take as many RPG-7 hits as a fully armoured tank and then drive away. Janes.COM Article. As something of a Trekkie it gives me the mild horn that at some point in the future a tank commander might say in battle; "Polarise the hull plating!" |

The army is working on regenerating armor types right now, well they don't technically regenerate. They are built to absorb impact shock to distribute the explosion better, then an electrical current applied to the skin reshapes the armor back to its original construction. Whether it will ever be fielded is another story but it's pretty awesome in concept.
As for the M1A2 a lot of its protection is due the the angle of its armor. It deflects more rounds and explosions than it actually takes.
