MW2: no dedi servers, no mods

Quote:
Fourzerotwo was on our BASH webcast this morning and he had a few surprises for the PC community.

Here are the snippets:

*
We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.
*
There is no delay for the PC version of MW2
*
There's prestige mode
*
Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.
*
You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.
*
You have private matches where you can customize the game
*
You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.
*
This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.
*
Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match
*
You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.
*
Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS

I've summarized some of my own thoughts from the cast here:

General

* IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
* GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
* No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
* Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
* DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
* Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.

Clans:

* No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
* Listen servers will connect to each other.
* IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin

Competitive Gaming

* Competitive gaming has changed forever.
* It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.

Modding

* Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
* Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.

That doesn't sound too good. I hope IW know what they're doing.

bottom two links are broken Steve.

This is really bad news for PC's. If they do this and the game proves successful then you can bet other companies will follow suite.

If this interview is true than the PC will be the same as it always was. It's hard to imagine that IW would take away all the things that created it in the first place.

Check out this interview on Sept 22 where the guy says MP will be the same as it was in COD4.

apparently the information above came from Robert B (i think?) and the latest news came from a PR rep during an interview (402?)

either way if this is true or not, its the ultimate PR disaster and its going to hit server hosting companies who accepted pre-orders...

an interesting point was made how if they use IW.Net they can charge a premium per month... and no doubt it'll happen as they have to get money back from the cost of research and development...?

im hoping theres an offical statement today since its now a business day, they cant let this go on until release day

IW.net just gives them control on how people play online. It also gives them the ability to charge for service AND charge for downloadable content. You can expect to pay $10 for a downloadable map pack as we do on consoles if this happens.

Not only that but the games lifespan is in IW's hands. If in 5 years they don't want to playing it anymore because there is a new COD out, they can do that if players don't have the ability to host their own servers.

There are some benefits to it I guess, as well as disbenefits. Give it a read. ^

I do like the idea that it will help cut down in piracy and cheaters.

But how are tournaments and leagues like TWL and Clanbase going to run on MW2? I know that TWL has it's own mod for it's leagues.

I'd say there's high chance IW will pull it off successfully - they have quite a good rep.

i suppose you havnt been reading the IW forums, most people have ditched IW and jumped on Dice (after their statement about BF:BC2) perfect timing by Dice lol

unless IW bring in dedicated servers (even if they are hosted by IW themselves) i doubt ill play MP... i only play in 1 server in COD4 because i know the players and theres an admin on almost 24/7... last thing i want is to be in a server with random people and someone who has host advanatage
