Making Backgrounds

Hey all, I make a fair few sigs for ppl, and enjoy doing all the graphcis and stuff, but one problem that I keep running up against is the background, I have no idea how to design them, or even where to start with the design. Can anyone help?

i've been told that what alot of people do i paint colors on and use asstd effects to get something they like.
