Ram and Processor

Hey, I have a 333mhz front side bus processor and my motherboard supports 400mhz. I have Pc3200 ram but it is running and 333. Can I put the memory speed up to 400mhz? Or will it go only as fast as the CPU fsb speed?

the system has to all be at the same speed, so you are stuck at 333 unless you overclock the cpu

just overclock the cpu

i have a Barton M, stock is 133/266, but it clocks to 225/500 with pc3200, cant go higher but i think the ram is holding the system back

Yeah I am thinking I wasted money getting PC3200. I shoulda gotten an AMD Xp 64 3200+. I would have to get some new fans and crap. I wonder how much hotter it would get.

What do you suggest adding if I am going to overclock?
Also another question. I am getting a lot of dust in my machine due to the PS and case design. What do you suggest I use to filter or lessen the dust?

best thing with the dust thing is to move it off the floor is it is there, or just vaccuum the room more often i had a dust filter but i ripped it out because it reduces the airflow too much and when it gets full of dust it pretty much stops airflow full stop.

hmm so you don't add any fans or anything when you over clock? I guess I will move the case that or get a lot of compressed air.

What I don't get is why do P4's an the new AMD's run at 800 or 1600mhz FSB when the ram only goes 400mhz?

amd's are x2 fsb thingy and intel's are 3x
or was, i dont know about the newer cpus.


when overclocking, just keep an eye on the cpu temp. over 50 degrees C is pretty warm and if it gets to 60 then that's too hot. you might need to get a new cpu cooler, some are a lot better than others (and more expensive) but they doa better job. fans for the case are good to i have 2 fans sucking in and 2 blowing out which helps a lot.

If you plan on doing any serious or extended overclocking, a water cooling system is a good way to go. Overclocking has been known to cut down on a cpu's life, and water cooling will help that. I think you can get kits for around $100. Or, for half the price, you can get one of these mean looking mamma jammas:

Just make sure it'll fit in your case

Or, for $10, take my solution: I bought a $10 box fan from dollar general, duct taped, yes, duct taped the fan to the open side of my case, then turned it on full blast I droped the cpu temp almost 20 degrees F. Granted it was loud...

Yeah a lot of water cooling systems are like $200 and are big ole' things. BTW that thing is monsterous.

Or nip down to your nearest airport & unbolt one of the nearest 747

thing to watch on the star ice cooler is the memory slots to make sure they don't snag on the thing.
(You will also need to remove the motherboard as they are secured through to the back of the board due to the weight)

had to do that with a cooler one time, funny thing was the comp wouldnt boot after i put it on :O after RMAing the board, it came back and i noticed that they had soldered one of the little chips back to the motherboard that i must have knocked off the back oops

LOL at least they fixed it. That would suck to go out and buy a $100+ board because of that.
