Hard disk woes.

My father has a Verbatim 1 TB external hard disk, which was used for sometime after it was bought, but after storing all the backups, it has been like that for almost 1 year. Now whenever we try to access it, windows keeps asking for formatting the hard disk. It is being recognized, but it can't be accessed. A virus scan was started and it found something, cleaned it, but still the error persists. On clicking properties, and selecting the disk checking tool, it responds that the disk needs to be formatted before the tool could be used. Is there anything that can be done before data recovery software would be needed?
Which would be the most useful data recovery software (free or trial), something that works in most cases? I have plenty of these from Norton, EaseUS, Partition Magic, etc. but all of them are older versions. Will the version have some effect on the recovery process?
Thanks in advance.
