Computer wont DeFrag...HELP!

Recently i noticed somehting odd with my computer, whenever i reboot it, instead of fulling scanning from 1%-100% it starts copy and cross referecing files. I tried to Defrag it, but i got this error message:

the scan has been cancelced because an error occured in the file: C:\WINDOWS\INF\DRVINDEX.PNF

My thoughts are i just leave the computer running for about 5 hours and let it do its crossrefercing/copying and that should fix it right?

will you can do is scan disk

Start> run> Type in: chkdsk /f /r

a dos windows will pop-up press Y press enter then restart your system, hopefully this will fix the error on the Hard drive and system files. it will do a boot-up scan for error's let it finish walk away may take 45-1hr to finish this is a through scan

you get to scan-disk go to the hard drive right click-on (the hard drive) open proprities... then up top you "see tools" as will


do you use anything other then the normal maints system?

like Norton system works, fix-it serials, a 3rd party maint tool?

what windows you using, windows 2000, Xp family you can get a anti-virus programs some will do a boot-scan for virus and you can try to scan virus in safe-mod most anti-virus programs will work in safe-mod

older windows system you can find scan-disk>

ok so how you get it to work? scan disk fix it or you let it run for a long time?
