Anyone talked to Siemens support for industrial PLCs?
Siemens tech support (as it was, its better now) You: Hi! Siemens: Hi! You: I have a problem with *blah blah blah* Siemens: You don't know how to do that? Haha! *hangs up* Thats one horror storie of their crappy support. Seriously they actually did laugh and hang up! And when talking about annoyance: To just program a siemens PLC you first need: To install the software, this takes about the same time as to install an operating system (around 30 min) Then to use the program you need to use this diskett (yes one of those things that now adays cant be read by a modern computer as disketts are outdated! So you need to buy a reader) Now it cut's special files to the C drive, so you dont have them on the diskett anymore. So in case of hard disk failur, thought luck, you're screwed! They don't give a rats behind, you need to buy another license for around $1500. You can not make a copy! Thats not enough, to actually transfer the program to the PLC you need a special connector. This is an extra (you need it but you wont get it when you buy the PLC (atleast $3000 for a simple siemens PLC!)) this unit for a laptop is another $500! And on top of this you get half bad support which to my record you have to pay extra for. Do they care? Hell no! They are the worlds largest PLC manufactur. Misubishi on the other hand (not quite as powerfull but it will do most things you will need) give free first class support! If they don't know the answer then will work till they find a solution! This service is of course also free! Their PLC are cheap, they are still powerfull. You get a cable supplied with every PLC you buy and they are just standard RS232 connection, if you don't have one just buy a cheap USB to RS232 adapter for $10. But as Said Siemens are slightly more powerfull and are more suited for the Process industries (which demands more of the PLC) Last edited by SilentTrigger; 04-12-2007 at 01:45 PM. |
