Best Antivrus

Best Antivirus

I am stuck on what is the best antivirus software.
Some say Avast! Some say McAfee. Some say Norton, some say Panda.

I want to know what is the best one that is practically free.
Do not worry Chief, I will download Avast! Once my Norton expires.

Chris_OJB_DF645 --Any help is appreciated

dont listen to steve...lol j/k

i use norton and im fine with it...

the only thing that you have to do with norton is to pay like $30-$40 for it every year...

it updates on its own so u really don't have to do anything with it besides run a virus scan to check for viruses...

i had Norton gave me error with it scrip blocking when i use "Microsoft Picture It! Publishing Platinum 2001" every time i exit out of when i was finish with it, always crash or lockup on me, after i got some other anti-virus program no more error from Microsoft Picture It! Publishing Platinum 2001 exiting out. thats was my big bug with it and not see all virus in the system that got by it so easy.

some one told me about Avast! and found it cover me so many ways i feel in love with it. for a free item without any adware or spyware crap in it...i had no then bad to say about it. found so many virus i never known i had it remove them or stop them dead before they got into the system. updates like 2-5 a week some times too.

i vote: Avast!
for me it rocks

think this thread should have a polling added to it.
Avast!
McAfee
Norton
Kasperski

maybe other names added to the polling

a few reasons why nortons shouldnt be there

#1 it leaves a load of carp on your system when u try to uninstall it.
#2 it hogs upto 40% of disk time constantly
#3 uninstalled it from my mates system a few weeks ago, installed Kasperski, which found over 30 virus/trojan proggies :/
#4 large memory footprint
#5 bloadted with too much rubbish you never need

should be enough to at least think about dumping it.

here a online scan by them: "Click-here"

never hurts to see if they can find more then you think you have.

they can scan one file or the whole system you select what options you like to use.

I must remember to never accept an e-mail from you.

Everyone should use an anti virus program, firewall and anti spy-ware program.

Man you kids are naive. All the junks comes in your systems uninvited.

I use McAfee in conjunction with SpyBot, Windows Washer, Ad Aware SE, and Spyware Doctor.

Works for me.

Leave the Antivirus on auto update.

totally impossible, nortons scans every single file that runs on you computer, hence uses up more disk time that if it was not running, and it does a slow job of it. installing proggies is painfully slow to, turn it off while installing stuff for it to finish on the same day you started installing.

firewall on or off makes no difference to disk performance.

the only good soultion from both norton and mcafee is mcafee virus-scan enterprise imo.. very small and quick, plus it uses almost no resources at all (I use it on the server here).. can hardly tell it's running and just removes anything it finds automatically without a chit-load of popus asking what to do.. it also has port blocking and anti-spyware all in one so there are no bulk apps running..

I do hate the consumer version of both norton and mcafee tho.. mcafee is so bulkey and slooooow and nortons can never access a virus file.. it tells me I have one 100000000 times but always sais access denied.. I had to format because of a loop i got in with norton over a test file!

basic if you have all active or running fully it would be a over kill on the system.

basic:
1-firewall a good one.
2-Anti-virus one fully running and enable to scan all active files and the 2nd one for on demands call to scan were the end user can use ether anti-virus do scan for virus in his/her system.

1 can only be use in it full mode and 2nd one for on call by the end user to scan all files or scan the HHD.

basic i have 2- anti-virus programs running, but only one is enable to scan on it own and the 2nd one i use to scan for things the first one may have over looked.

only one have to enable to scan e-mails and auto-scan on activated files that come alive.

adware only have one anti-virus to watch over the system, rest have on demand to use when the end user like to double check for things that the others may have over looked same for any extra anti-virus programs too.

I have: anti-adware
1-spysweeper (enable 24/7) $$$$
2-Ad-Aware SE Personal ( on call) freebie
3-Spybot - Search & Destroy ( on call) freebie

I have: anti-virus (both are free)
1-Avast! home version (enable 24/7) freebie HHD/Internet/e-mail/web sites....ect it cover a lot of things.
2-Trend Micro anti-virus (on call) freebie bundle Fix-it 5

Firewall: only can have one firewall enable and use at anytime.
Zone Labs Security (enable 24/7)
Windows Firewall (disable)

System tools: Fix-it 5 $$$$ does a lot for me more ways then any others i tryout, it out do system-work by Norton.
===========================================
i work at a warehouse one time we ship all stocks through one Carrier draw back the shipping company gone on strike and we had people screaming for their shipments from that day on were change to having more then one shipping company to handle all shipment's. it was truck line yellow who gone on strike and they are no more they belly up.
===========================================
this is the funny part avast! may over look something when it do a deep scan or bootscan when it do, i use Trend Micro anti-virus to do a deepscan the whole system and avast will catch on a virus in the system, shocking you ask me. when Trend Micro checking out a file for a virus avast! do a double look and see what it is for real and sends a alarm you have a virus.

feel safe have not got any virus for a long time in e-mail or in files.

did get a java virus but it was a minner thing think it has to do with geocitie.com page maker thing. it java base.

to goofball: no your not your in a dream land and all the girls are no longer there. chucking pock you got.

you know some being saying adware are not that bad? get a freaking clue to them all, some can be as bad as a Trojan horse or a worm.

here a adware you see what this crap can do then think again.

Quote:
this bad boy is active on the INTERNET don't be a fool let it hit you.

ADWARE Description:

Name: Lopdotcom

Author: C2 Media Ltd.

Category: Adware

Threat Assessment: Critical
Description: Lopdotcom is a pay-per-click search portal that places numerous Web site shortcuts on your desktop, adds Web sites to your Favorites folder, and changes your default search engine pages.

Characteristics: Lop.com may hijack your homepage and redirect Internet Explorer search features to www.Lop.com. In case you restore your default homepage, Lop can reset it back to Lop.com the next time you start your computer. Lop also has the ability to add numerous Lop.com Web links to your desktop and Favorites list, display pop-up advertisements, and install its own toolbar containing even more Lop.com Web links. Lastly, Lop may install a dialer, which hijacks your modem and dials toll numbers in order to access "pay" Web sites.

Method of Infection: Lopdotcom generally propagates itself using dialog boxes, various social engineering methods, through a java scripting error, or is dropped by a Trojan horse. Usually dialers are bundled with various, free software programs

don't listing to what some may say to others or to you about adware they are not nice items to have in your system! same as any virus they cost you money and screwup your system but good.

this is only one sample of a very bad adware.

some are saying i don't need a firewall, anti-virus or even a anti-adware program? guy you letting your self wide open in the end it may even cost you big time, in phone bills USD-800.00 has happen before and repair/replace hardware system.

there are free firewalls and anti-virus programs you can get some are really good sygate is one and zone alarm is good too both can get for free version, and anti-virus there are a lot of them one can get for free too online. same for Anti-adware/spy-ware they do some good and save you money there are some of them for free too. use Google and search them out.

look up for home version most software MFG have free version for home users to get, they some times be limited but most part they do you good. Avast! is not limited full version for home users and it totally free it cover you so many way it not funny if fact it shocking what some web sites (pages) have virus (trojan horse) in them.

as for: Windows washer think this do about the same thing:
name: Eraser 5.7

"Heidi Computers Limited "
Eraser is an advanced security tool for Windows that allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. It works with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, and DOS. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive. Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the U.S. Department of Defence, and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.

download Link: http://www.download.com/Eraser/3640-...-10231813.html

i have never try ether one out before.
