need help - my friend asap

my stupid friend found a 128 mb graphics card laying around the house, and decided to see put it in his comp, and now the comp beeps, and the monitor will not cut on, i am guessing the cable is not hooked up between the comp and the monitor or the graphics card is not in the slot all the way

umm maybe try and disable your mb's video device driver and make the video card the primary driver for your video

Hang on, no i had the same problem before...it will do know good. Its like putting a lamborgani engine into a snow blower...the power supply cant muster enough power to run it therefore wont allow it to run.

Replace it with the old one.

riders idea is good, one of the first things a computer does when its boting up is it checks and loads drivers for everything, thats why the keyboards light flashes, if the POST finds an error, on alot of computers it wil stop...

Doesnt matter if its its agp or pci, if i cant muster enough power to run it it wont run the comp.

Newer cards these days need at least a 350. I put a new pci card in an old comp and had the same problem. The psu just didn't have the juice. Stuck it in a comp with a bigger psu, bam, it worked.

if its a 128mb then more than likely it has no power supply, it either plugs in to a PCI slot or a AGP and the mb powers it automatically but you will not get any video from it if you do not disable the mb's display driver and install the video cards driver

doesnt matter what size power supply u got running your machine as long as the video card doesnt have a plug that goes to the power supply

Not really, I had one too...and yea it does matter on the power supply. Its like running a car on a C battery no power no output. Power supply gives the energy to boot the system up so that it can run threw BIOS to see if everything is working correctly, i.e. drivers, etc. With insufficent power your not going anywhere.

i presume the 128 mb card is better than what he originally had. my point was why would you just have a better gfx card just lying around and not in use? i have spare cards but they are older and not much good.

still no mention of card or psu, what's the point in this thread?

Not quite rider...for the seriously high end cards they might have their own plugs, but there is a gap in there where it does need to draw more juice from the psu through the board, but doesn't have its own plug.

Stevie, I also thought it was odd that there was a better card just laying around
