Particle Density?

Can anyone who knows explain to me what particle density is and does? I notice that when I turn it to normal or low I get a big performance increase but does this decrease image quality?

Ok just looked it up in the instruction booklet it says quote

Particle Density

"Adjusts how many particles are used to render smoke and fire in the game"

Look on page 11 and 12 in the booklet for all the graphics settings descriptions
