Sad Viewing And Editing .def Files?

Wanting to view and maybe edit .def files (specifically for DFTFD), but the program mentioned in this forum thread doesn't seem to successfully open the .def files (in DFTFD SMALL.PFF file)?

Either there is no detail shown when the .def files are supposedly opened by PFFEditor, or get an error message - "Error:Load SCR 53 File not found: VBExp.dll" !?

But there IS a file called VBExp.dll within the PFFEditor directory!

Is there any other program than can open, view and edit .def files?

Thanks.

You may want to try this one: http://www.novahq.net/files.php?ID=334

I know that one works, but you need to extract the DEF file from the pdf, edit it, then re-pack it. I personally use Jackal's PFF Editor Utility to do that stuff..

Thanks.

I know that the .def files have to be extracted from the pff file first. But after extraction, PFFEditor doesn't seem to decrypt the .def files at all. For file CHARATTR.DEF there is nothing displayed, and get the error message (as stated above) for file ITEMS.DEF.

The program DeSCR I have already tried for encrypting and decrypting .def files. Problem is that it doesn't decrypt the file "CHARATTR.DEF". I tried different game versions (that use different "keys"), but the file CHARATTR.DEF will still not decrypt!? Maybe this file uses some special/unique key? If so, what is that key?

Sorry I don't have that key. Did you try decoding it as a LW file with the DeSCR program? The first program you tried might work if you have access to a Windows XP Machine. The error you got was probable a runtime error. Most of those old programs were built for Windows XP.

Thanks.

I tried different keys in DeSCR, but they didn't work.

Yes, the issue with PFFEditor may be because I ran it under Windows 7. I'll try compatibility mode, or running under XP instead.

Just had a look for you
The PFFEditor and DeSRC both work fine on Win7/64
The DeSRC wont convert the DFLW/TFD character.def files but will do BHD and so on.

I don't edit DFLW or TFD but...
Is it possible that the defaultdir string may be a cause?

In scrkeys.ini

Code:
//single tab seperated
default	2
defaultdir	D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\MyProjects\DeSCR
defaultmask	*.def;*.pt?;*.aip;mislist.txt;*.adm;
DF1	0x04960552
C4/DF2/DF3/TFD	0x01234567
BHD/TS/JO	0x2A5A8EAD
JO beta demo	0xABEEFACE
Could changing to the current DeSCR directory fix it?

For Example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\NovLogic\DeSCR

Thanks for the information.

I'm running all the programs (DFTFD, DeSCR and PFFEditor) under Windows 7 32 bit at the moment.

After extracting ITEMS.DEF and CHARATTR.DEF files from SMALL.PFF file, tried setting PFFEditor to run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode, but it still will not decrypt either ITEMS.DEF (and still get error message that file VBExt.dll is not found!???) nor CHARATTR.DEF files!

Why on earth can't PFFEditor find the file VBExt.dll which is located within its own directory!? That is weird!

This is the items.def decrypted

When using the DeSRC have you selected key option
C4/DF2/DF3/TFD
Select Decrypt, select file to convert, click open.

Yes, thanks.

I've gotten DeSCR to decrypt ITEMS.DEF, but doesn't it doesn't decrypt CHARATTR.DEF despite trying several keys.

The issue is more to do with PFFEditor which is supposed to decrypt .DEF files as well. But its decryption feature doesn't seem to work on my computer (can't find VBExt.dll file)?
