Any CAD people here?

I want to build one of these
http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite...orrerypage.htm

It came with a .dxf file with all the components, however its not set up the way the CNC place would like and I really only want the gears and not everything else.

I'm wondering if someone could take the dxf file I have, create one to the specs of the cnc place and 'copy and paste' the wheels across to it? Not looking for a favour, I'm more than happy to pay to have it done....

Anyone interested/able?

Excuse please but I'm sorry I missed this.

Dave61 is a machinist as I understand and would no doubt be interested in it too.

Great project, do you mind if I ask if it's a home style commercial venture or hobby there Mike?

Looking at the speed of ST's help he's a bit of a Wizard, good work all round here.

Just a hobby, have taken up woodworking and thought this was a nifty project, but the idea of cutting all those gears on the bandsaw didn't appeal to me, hence the CNC.

Got to do the rest but might dress it up, a guy blogged his build at www.liming.org/orrery/ and I like his base better, might do something like that..

Like that one alot more too Mike, feels more geunine in a way

And it would of been done alot faster if i had done any 2D recently but pretty much only do 3D designing now so had to intall the program and relearn how to use the software and a new version so buttons have moved around since i last used it (thankfully you can type the commands intead )

Just a couple more questions please Mike.

The illustration in fig. 2 on the page is a contemporary build by the fellow, John Rowley.

Looks very intricate, are the planetary rings brass or something? They look too delicate to be wood.

And the engravings look like Ivory or Baleen inlay.

I wonder why they used a polygonal instead of a purely circular mount and enclosure for the workings.

Might have been more aesthetically appealing or for more practical reasons like fabrication difficulties of the times.

Thereby the reason for a wooden clockwork drive I guess.

The rings on the rowley orrery are called armillary bands and depict different things, I'm not familiar with that exact orrery but id say they are brass, or perhaps if commissioned for a wealthy client maybe a precious metal?

I assume the base is such that it can then depict each of the 12 zodiac, I suspect at the time (1700's) the depiction of the zodiac softened the scientific nature of the object in a overtly religious world.

Wouldn't assume the originals have woiden gears, they may have used metal, its just the guy that made the replica plans that I'm using is a woodwork site..

Fascinating, the church was the enemy of science.

Thanks Mike, enjoy the build, hope you can show us a pic later.
