Will this help, in any way?

I have a bit of knowledge in PS as I've used it for quite some time (not long enough though), but I've never really messed with transparent stuff so I can't help ya there.

Save the item as .png and it will save any transparency there is.

It has been while since I have used photoshop, but if I remember correctly when you start a new project, one of the options down below the size of the image is the background type. - make sure you select transparent.

You then just save it as a gif file.

If you have a solid background now, you will have to add a transparent layer, then some how remove your background (which would be easy if your background is on its own layer and you didn't add any thing to its layer - you just hide or delete the background layer).

from what I can tell, PNG, GIF and ICO are the only image formats that support transparency
