Yeah it's pretty awsome, I got the newest SUSE build the other day and it took a few seconds to reach full speed of my 10 mb/s the same when I had my 100 down

About TPB:

What I've found out so far is:

It's said to be hosted somewhere in Malmo, Sweden inside a mountain complex, I'm guessing a sold out military complex.

They seem to be bounching all over europe after looking at a traceroute of their IP

What I've read now (which is really insteresting in a geeky way hehe), is that they have upped the servers a bit from the start in 2003, they have gone from:

1.3 GHz Celeron 256 mb ram (2003)

with tracker (I guess a tracker finds out who downloads what or who has what or something?)

To:

279 GHz of 64-bit Xeons and 204GB RAM

without running a tracker

The search alone is handled by 60 GHz of processing power and 36 GB ram. My geeky brain is doing backflips over this

Nothing compared to the likes of google (my geek brain would probebly die by their stats) and so on but this site should in theory handle very litte data if you go by how torrents work, if I'm correct.

We should have 30 megs up also... grrr.
Holy crap batman, thats an awsome ping, is the test server next door?

Just did a quick calc and can conclude that I have a download limit of around 3000 GB / Month, which I would never utalize. Doubt i would go over 250 GB either. Anyone of you actually gone over your limit?

Especially you scott considering you have servers running, I know you don't have that 250 limit, but if you would estimate?

We're on the same fiber network and ISP. It's called UTOPIA and can do 10 Gbps but we only have the 30 meg plan.

Mine varies wildly, could it be because I share my connection with someone else?

Advertised by the ISP as 100 Megabit/per second connection and shows in my Windows System as Link Speed 100Mbps Paying approx US$85 per month.
Is it any good for hosting/putting up a game server?

Your windows system is going to show 100 Mbps or 1000Mbps every time because that's just the throughput to your router. If you're sharing your network you're definitely going to see fluctuations especially as users are streaming content. Streams are usually implemented on the UDP transport protocol which can choke out normal TCP traffic (browsing/downloading) if the router isn't configured properly.

I wonder how SpeedTest.net checks throughput? It must just check available bandwidth because I think to do real throughput you'd have to have unrestricted UDP packets going back and forth.

Yes I have to forward a UDP port range to host DFX2 but I often get reports of lagging from the players. Especially in the US and Europe.

Will it still lag if I just use a server and don't join in myself? It seems to be in some maps more than others?

Missions that compile to BMS without any warnings from the MEd are still affected.

The reason you are lagging if you host is because your upload speed isn't very good and the fact that many of the players are probably in North America probably gives you huge propagation delay too.

Can aslo be your router thats the hold up.

Try unplugging everything and just plugg in your computer and see what speeds you get, would be intersting to see

Just upgraded to 100/10 fiber this morning and I'm loving it! Now I just need a faster router hehe

Can't unplug yet as I have to let Swifty Helen know so her connection doesn't fail at a bad time, she's not home now but I think her connection runs for this and that all the time.

A further question I do have.
Does the resolution and detail settings I have set in my DFX2 affect the results of hosting?
Does it influence the other player's view and settings at all?

In other words should I serve in the lowest or highest detail and resolution ranges?

Not sure how that works in DF, I presume it's not a dedicated server like everyother game out there? I guess it could have some impact if the hosting computer is on a lower end, that would impact as the computer would slow down in serving the requests by the players

It shouldn't assuming your computer is powerful enough to run the game smoothly. NL isn't going to send that kind of data over the wire.
