toys of distruction

built this an hour ago.

it is a charge\discharge aperatus for capacitors.

it will charge to a maximumn of 350Vdc

in the red container thaere are 40 350v happysnap caps(disposeable camera capacitors)
they are charged by the secondary transformer connected thru a bridge rectifier that i salvaged out of a PC power supply.

the secondary transformer is fed by the main transformer that was salvaged from
an old CNC machine.

the caps are discharged thru a SCR that was taken out of a power module
for a CNC machine.

the SCR is triggered by a 35Vdc cap that is charged by the main transformer connected by a half wave rectifier and triggered by pushing the Red button, the charging is done by pushing the Black button.

this is a clip of the sparking created by the discharge of the caps at 300Vdc, ya can hear the shockwave created by the arc on thr clip

the clip is a little grainy due to i cant post a bigger zip than what i did.

lol, it charges the capacitors when you push the black button and it discharges them when you push red button.

as to what ya cn do with it, hmm, blast box, coilgun driver, ring launcher driver, scare the hell out of classmates, lol, bow up some wire witch is what i did in the clip, i just took a piece of #18 AWG wire and blew it up, eat holes in aluminum cans weld them together, there is a lot i can do with it but the best is the coilgun, uses magnatism to launch a 3\8 steel ball thru a wall or stove pipe lol, done that b4 when i first built 1, it ate itself after the 4th firing, but i just had a box with a charger in it and all it had was a flip switch and i turned it on had everything set up and i let it charge and charge and charge, got 468Vdc and when i hit the switch to fire it the coilgun jumped off of the table towards me and blew a termanel off of the coil on the gun,i looked and looked for the steel ball and then i knoticed the potbellystove was letting off a lot more smoke than normaly and i looked at it and ther was a big hole in the stove pipem i moved everything like the coilgun outside from then on, lol.

when i get my coilgun finished ill post a clip of it firing, i still gota get some 3\8 nonferious tubing, aluminum wont work nor will brass, for it will set up edycurrents in the tubing affecting velocity.

ok, starting out on the coilgun, found some 1\2ID tubing from the junkpile motorhome in my yard, it gona be scraped anyway so i took the liberty of leberating the cold water pipe, lol.

this is what i got so far and is about all ya need to do a coilgun, tubing and wire some cloth tape, has to be cloth for the coil will get warm and melt electrical tape, this is the starting of what they call a single stage coil gun, single stage because it uses only one coil for the accelerator.

the recess in the tube is not required but it makes the winding of the coil go smother and prevents the coil from jumping off the tube when firing, just make shure not to cut to deep or the tube will snap off most likely during the last turn of the windings making ya wana get the hammer out, lol.

the wire is a inductive filter out of a treadmill that is #18 AWG copper magnet wire, good size being it is easy to work with and doesnt blow apart with 350Vdc, still gets warm thoe.

now to wind the thing.

and a few munits later ya are finished if ya didnt break the dang end off the tube, lol.

winding by hand is time consuming and will make ya hands cramp if ya aint used to the constant streign from having to keep tension on the coil the entire time like 20munits of winding.

the coil is 2.5in long and is 4 layers of the #18 wire, direction doesnt really matter but the winding have to be pretty close to each other or the magnetic field suffers.

this is just basicly a high powered solonoid that flings things instead of haaving a plunger or other type of core.
now for the test firing of the coil gun.

ok, here is my coilgun setup, there is the gun, the target the mount, the ammo.

the mount is just an old drill press vice, works good, the ammo is a piece of 3\8-16 grade 5 bolt that i cut off with a hacksaw.
there is a clip attatched that shows the test firing at 280Vdc ill do it again with 358Vdc or even the peak voltage of the caps.

and here is the poor can that was shot with the 3\8 bolt, Exit wound.

just cleaned some cokecola out of my camera, lol.
i put it bout 3 ft away from where i had the can sitting and when it hit the camera got spattered.

was just wondering what would happen if i shot a full can.

i also range tested it, with the coil gun sitting 3 ft off ground and pointing streight it will fling it bout 120ft b4 it hit ground bet i could get 100yrds out of it with the right coil geometries and right size ammo.

disreguard the wood ya keep seeing, without it the camera tries to focus behind the can and gets blurred
