The more items there are, the more lag players will experience. There is a limit that is handled by the game itself and is not really dependent on hardware or connection speed.
You don't need the DF2 Easy Updater or Vista fixes anymore. If you're on Facebook and a member of the DF2 group there is a downloadable game on the page with all the fixes already applied that is very easy to use. Or you can also purchase a cheap copy with patches already applied from GOG.com.
