Mater is the Latin word for Mother.
Its derivative is utilised in such words as Matron (senior nurse), or Maternal (the desire to or love of having children).
Exceptionaly posh English children might be heard using the word Mater as a noun describing their mothers, or Pater (the masculine equivalent.
There are other uses of the word Mater but thats another matter.
