That same **** happens to me...there are 2 reasons
1- Firewall: If the host has a firewall thats not set right, it can conflict with yours.
2- Location: This can happen if your trying to join a server from another country
What happens when the screen goes black is a Connection Interupted. If you wait a few, it may go away. It has happened to me before.
