Actually, websites simply cater to which resolution is the most used, which at first was 640x480. For about the past 5 years or so, that has moved to 800x600 as people are starting to have to upgrade their computers and (usually) getting a new, larger monitor.

Only recently has it become the majority having 1024x768. I believe right now it's around 54% run 1024x768 and 28% use 800x600.

The smart company or webdesigner will make two different sites, one for 800 and one for 1024 with an automatic script to send each resolution to it's own optimized site. Anyway, just some interesting tid bits...
