I'm surprised there isn't the capacity for more than two "sides" per battle, even a local resistance group for the region of the skirmish. Players could then choose to be mercenaries for whichever side they wish. Stats could reflect their abilities in the groups they have fought for. This could also affect another groups wish to "employ" them in a battle. There is also scope for earning money based on their success.
I'm sure there are plenty of ideas knocking around the Think Tank at Novalogic!!!
